Short Story: Present and Past

This is the story of a girl called Chetana. She was beautiful and born in a conservative family. This was the era when girls education was not given importance. Soon, she was married. She would remember her friends at school with whom she would joke, laugh and have those little fun moments. But they also had got married and there was no communication thereafter.

The little girl now had the responsibility of taking care of the household. She was never praised by anyone in her house. Though she was perfect in all the household chores and carried out all the tasks efficiently. Husband used to be away for earning. She would do her duties whole heartedly.

Slowly times passed and she had a daughter. The family named her Jyoti. Chetana used to love her but would find less time in taking care of her. Slowly, Jyoti grew up and always wondered her mother was most beautiful , so intelligent as would often give her advice on little things and how she was able to predict what would unfold. Jyoti decided that it was time that her mother who deserved the best and never demanded anything should be given her due. Jyoti would spend time and listen to her childhood stories. Her friends funny incudents, how her grandmother was strict and so on. Jyoti in turn would share everything with Chetana , her mother who was now her best friend.  

Jyoti , finished her studies and started working. She asked her mother , if she wanted to go and meet her friends  or her old neighbours. Then Chetana told her something that is valid for everyone.

She said , “Remember, the time that goes never comes back again. You can still find those people but having the same incidents, situation is impossible” She said , you are my best friend and my most beautiful present. Why dwell in the past when the present is so beautiful.
